2022 Woman of the Year Awarded to Marico Sayoc
CASSY’s beloved Executive Director Marico Sayoc wears many hats, including former Mayor of Los Gatos and current Los Gatos Town Council member. She was honored by Assemblyman Evan Low, who selected her for the 2022 Woman of the Year Award, which recognizes contributions made by remarkable women in California. Those of us at CASSY may be a bit partial, but we couldn’t be prouder. Nor could the award be more well-deserved. As well as a tireless advocate for youth mental health, Marico is a champion of unity within the community at large.
During her tenure as mayor in 2021, “a small group of protesters disrupted both in-person and virtual council meetings, speaking out against critical race theory, Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ community.” Their protests escalated, targeting council members’ homes as well as council meetings, finally leading to a forceful community response, the United Against Hate Walk on November 14.
Ever gracious, Sayoc accepted the award saying, “I normally don’t like surprises, but I’m very grateful….I just want to acknowledge that together we’re stronger.”
