Surviving Grief: Building Awareness through Inspiration

Surviving Grief: Building Awareness through Inspiration

By Michelle Ramos, LMFT

What began as a way to channel her grief, Jennifer Turner’s painted rock project turned into something extraordinary that has inspired and united people near and far. In loving memory of her son, Alexander (Alec) Turner, who died by suicide in August 2017, Jennifer began painting inspirational stones. On one side of the rocks are encouraging messages, and, on the other, suicide and crisis resource numbers. Jennifer creates many unique rocks, some with artwork that coincides with the changing seasons or holidays, others with special meaning related to her son’s favorite pastimes. Jennifer then leaves these beautifully decorated rocks in meaningful public places for others to find. Jennifer hopes that they will provide a sense of comfort and a symbol of hope while raising suicide awareness.

This project has expanded tremendously over the last few years. People who have learned of Jennifer’s mission have been motivated to feature her work or create their own inspirational rock art. Jennifer has graciously gifted many of her painted rocks to local schools in the Palo Alto School District, where they are housed in Wellness Centers or in school-based therapists’ offices to give to students. Last school year, during National Suicide Prevention Month and Mental Health Awareness Week, Jennifer supported Gunn High School in hosting rock painting sessions for students. She contributed many primed blank stones and examples of rock art designs to guide students in the painting process. Many of our high school students and staff expressed their appreciation for this activity and shared that it was a calming and rewarding experience.

Painted rocks with encouraging messages like "You got this!" and "Keep shining, beautiful one, the world needs your light"

Jennifer Turner’s special tribute to her son Alec has stirred and ignited something deep in our communities. Her heartfelt concern for those living with mental health challenges and thoughts of suicide continues to galvanize others to lend their voice and take action in suicide prevention. Jennifer’s strength and courage in sharing her journey through grief are remarkable. Her commitment to spreading compassion is heartwarming and admirable. We want to take this opportunity to acknowledge Jennifer and highlight all the work she is doing to raise suicide awareness. We hope that sharing her story will inspire others as she has so deeply inspired us.
