The 2022 Trevor Project National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health
The Trevor Project – whose mission is to end suicide among LGBTQ young people – is engaged in five key programs: crisis services, peer support, research, public education, and advocacy. It has just released its fourth-annual National Survey on LGBTQ Mental Health. The survey captures the experiences of nearly 34,000 youth in the United States ages 13 to 24.
The following information is pulled directly from the report:
- 45% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.
- Rates of suicidal thoughts have trended upward among LGBTQ young people over the last three years.
- 60% of LGBTQ youth who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it.
- 58% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing symptoms of depression.
- 73% of LGBTQ youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety.
- LGBTQ youth who felt high social support from their family reported attempting suicide at less than half the rate of those who felt low or moderate social support.
- LGBTQ youth who found their school to be LGBTQ-affirming reported lower rates of attempting suicide.
- LGBTQ youth who live in a community that is accepting of LGBTQ people reported significantly lower rates of attempting suicide than those who do not.
“Recent political attacks aimed at transgender and nonbinary youth have not only threatened their access to health care, support systems, and affirming spaces at school, they’ve also negatively impacted their mental health.”
– Dr. Jonah De Chants, Research Scientist, The Trevor Project
“We must recognize that LGBTQ youth face stressors simply for being who they are that their peers never have to worry about.”
– Amit Paley, CEO & Executive Director, The Trevor Project
“Although our data continue to show high rates of mental health and suicide risk among LGBTQ young people, it is crucial to note that these rates vary widely based on the way LGBTQ youth are treated.”
– Dr. Myeshia Price, Senior Research Scientist, The Trevor Project
