Three Ways to Promote Mental Health in the New Year
As we head into the new year, Dr. Darien Sutton on ABC News offers three quick tips to support your mental health. Why not pick one, give it a try, and see how you feel?
Practice self-care
What is self-care? Focusing on things that improve your mental and physical health. It can be “as simple as 10 min uninterrupted walk without your phone or catching up with your friends,” anything that refuels you.
If it sounds selfish, Sutton argues, “In the converse, it’s actually not. Just the same way that you take care of plants or gardens, if you want something to grow, you have to tend to it.”
You can start by making a list of things that matter to you, and then prioritize them in your weekly schedule, just as you would a to-do list.
Be kind to yourself
Many of us have a running dialogue of negative thoughts in our heads. Recognizing that internal dialogue is the first step. “Identifying negative thoughts so you can limit them or replace them with other thoughts” is crucial, says Sutton.
Take time to remind yourself of your worth, and talk to yourself like you would talk to your friends. You are deserving of the same kindness you show to others.
Prioritize sleep
Sleep is critical, because our brain health depends on it. Most of us need 7-9 hours a night, so we have to make it a priority. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is key, since “your body doesn’t know if it’s a weekday or a weekend.” To help yourself sleep better, put your phone away and limit screen time in order to wind down for sleep properly.
