Bridgerton’s Ruby Barker Shares Mental Health Struggles & Hope
British actor Ruby Barker, known for her work as Marina Thompson in the period drama Bridgerton, has revealed she sought out hospital inpatient treatment for mental health People magazine reported. In a refreshingly transparent message to her followers on Instagram filmed as she was waiting to be discharged, she shared, “I’ve been unwell for a really long time. I just want to be honest with everybody. I’ve been struggling.”
She encouraged followers who may be struggling as well to “take a break, stop being so hard on yourself.” She revealed that she had been “carrying the weight of the world upon my back, “ and had been feeling “rage-filled, frustrated, angry” due to “all this intergenerational trauma bundled up inside me.”
Explaining that she would be “taking a little bit of a break” from her stage and screen career in order to get well and return to her commitments, she disclosed she had a diagnosis that she would share at a later time. Barker asserted, “I cannot wait to fulfill all of my engagements and to have a good career and a good life. Because I do not want my diagnosis to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.”
Closing her remarks on a profoundly uplifting note, she added, “I want to survive and I will survive, and I’m going to. And so are you. That’s the beauty of it, so are you.”
