The holidays are known for spirit, joy, laughter, and family. However, as much happiness and joy the holidays bring, there is an aspect of fear of the large family gatherings and the conversations that come along with it.  While there is no denying the festive holiday spirit, for a lot of us, social anxiety can come up between the large groups of people you may encounter between Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas recitals, and gift exchanges. The challenges of the festive season of conversations range from fear of being judged, not getting heard, too scared to talk in front of lots of people. While this year, it may be a little different because of COVID, the holiday season will be around for a long time so we thought of things that help us during the holidays.

      1. Get some fresh air. While it might be a little chilly during winter time, it is important to take a breath of fresh air. Maybe even go for a (social distanced) walk. This can help get your mind off things and take a step back.
      2. Do something you like to do. It is crucial to get some time to yourself during these times, it can help to relax your mind and body. Cooking/baking, exercising, and even listening to music is a big way to relax and enjoy yourself.
      3. Call a friend, or family member. During COVID times, a lot of family members and friends aren’t able to see each other. Facetiming and calling them can be reassuring and help you cope with the different anxieties and other things with the holidays.

By doing these things, there is a greater possibility that you will be less anxious/upset, and more relaxed. It is important to focus on yourself, and try to make the most out of every day. Happy holidays!
